A lot of attention has come to Appalachia recently. Perhaps it originated with the popularity of Dopesick, because since that popular series ended, documentarian Peter Santenello has created his most celebrated series yet on Appalachia, hitting 16 million views in 4 weeks. I watched several episodes in that series and what comes across very poignantly is his respect and admiration for the people of the hills and hollers of West Virginia. Their love of family, work ethic, hospitality and humble nature- the heartbeat of community- apparently has hit a chord within the nation at large.
Closer to home, Krista Lesher, of Fayette County, is currently reaching thousands with the release of "West Virginia", a song written by her dad that speaks to these same values of all that is good in the hearts of men and women in this region of Appalachia.
Kayla Kessinger knows all about these traditional values. As one descended from the rich heritage of coal miners and hard working people, she is someone who lights up a room with her passion for helping others. Her enthusiasm for life and living with purpose radiates from every fiber of her being. It's no surprise that she is a popular person in the pro-life movement in West Virginia; she has experienced the transition of the Mountain State moving toward legislation to reflect our core values, first-hand.
I recently caught up with Kayla to learn more of her history and current work with Her PLAN, a pregnancy and life assistance network. My biggest takeaways were in discovering how early in life she developed a passion for serving others and the enormous collaboration of good hearted West Virginians who have stepped up to the plate to help and honor our most vulnerable citizens.
I invite you to watch Episode 32 to learn how our neighbors are embracing those in need and upholding the sanctity of life.
